Three out of ten fires that occur in homes begin in the kitchen area. All too often, fires, which could have been prevented, end up resulting in irreversible damage. First Alert, a manufacturer of home safety and security products, has compiled an article regarding factual information and statistics about kitchen fires, most of which are rather surprising.
According to First Alert's article and the National Fire Protection Association, there was an astonishing 114,000 cooking related home fires between the years 1999 and 2002, which resulted in nearly 5,000 injuries and almost 300 deaths. Also, unattended cooking is the number one cause of cooking fires in a home, and cooking fires are the most common cause of home fires and fire injuries occurring in a home.
Some more kitchen fire facts provided by First Alert are that two out of three home cooking fires (that have been reported) start with the stove, or at least in close range of the stove. In addition, electric ranges/stoves run a higher risk of causing a fire, injuries, and damage to property, but, gas ranges/stoves have a higher risk of fire deaths.
With these frightening statistics, the risk of a kitchen fire is one that is all too real, and something that many people mistakenly believe can never happen to them. However, it is absolutely crucial to realize how important fire prevention methods are.
